Consequences of deleting your Gmail account
Deleting an email account is a serious action and is not without consequences. These are some of the main problems you can expect if you delete your Gmail account:
- No access to your messages: The most obvious consequence of deleting your Gmail is that all saved messages will be lost. Forward important messages to your new email before deactivating your Gmail account. Even if you are careful, it is easy to forget about that important message you filed months ago. If you did not move it, it will disappear when your email account disappears.
- Others cannot reach you: If your customers and colleagues are accustomed to communicating with you at the deleted Gmail address, you may lose contact with them. Even if you notify all of your acquaintances about the change of email address, there is still a risk that someone is loading a business card with the previous email address.
- You cannot reset passwords for other accounts: Almost all of your accounts, from your bank account to your social media accounts and your account with the pizza delivery service, are associated with your email address. Most accounts send a reset link to your email address if you forget a password. However, if your email address is deleted, you may have trouble accessing your account.
Fortunately, Gmail does not recycle Gmail addresses at this time. Once a username has been deleted, it cannot be reused. This means that there is currently no chance of someone else starting to use their deleted Gmail account and pretending to be you.
What may be the reason behind deleting your Gmail account
With all the disadvantages of deleting a Gmail account, you might wonder why you would do it. There are some good reasons that could make you consider deleting an email account. Here are five:
-
Someone else hacked your account
While you may be tempted to immediately delete a hacked email account, you must first follow some other steps. First, go ahead and change your password. Then, report the hack to Gmail.
Inform your contacts that your account has been compromised and that the emails sent may not come from you. Finally, close the account and open a new account.
-
You are receiving too many unwanted messages
If you are being harassed or receive too much spam, you may want to delete your account. However, if you are being harassed cybernetically or otherwise disturbed through your Gmail account, you may be able to configure a filter and block unwanted messages.
Sometimes, however, the cyberstalker or spammer is too persistent. They can change email addresses and continue sending unwanted messages. If this happens, closing your Gmail account and opening a new account for which the offender does not have the address maybe your best option.
-
Your email is full of junk
If you rarely use your Gmail account to send emails regularly, but instead of giving the address to participate in contests or subscribe to email newsletters, your inbox may be full of a lot of unwanted messages.
While the best thing you can do is to delete unwanted messages and unsubscribe from any mailing list you are in, the junk can be too overwhelming. You may want a new beginning with a new email address.
-
You have exceeded your username
It is also possible to exceed an email address. If your username is your teen nickname or refers to your high school and you are now over thirty, it may be time to graduate to a grown-up Gmail username.
-
You have not used your account in years
An email account that is unused could be a security risk. If you are not checking your account regularly, you have no way of knowing if the account is compromised.
