And plans to equip it with solar panels that could deliver 1.6 megawatts of energy on sunny days. Google plans to become a zero-carbon company by investing in projects such as methane collection at cattle farms in Argentina and Brazil.
  15. Salaries at Google are not high. Bosses Brin and Page have an annual salary of about $ 150,000. And the systems engineer has an average annual salary of $ 35,000, which is low considering the competition. However, employees have been getting a lot of shares today through Google’s launch. Features and Functions of Google Gmail

  1. Storage

Gmail users were initially provided with 1 GB of mail storage. By April 1, 2005 – the anniversary of the launch of the service – the quota increased to 2 GB. And Georges Harik, head of Gmail, promised to increase space to infinity.

On April 24, 2012, Google announced that in connection with the launch of Google Drive, the space in Gmail increases from 7.5 GB to 10 GB and this is not the limit. On May 13, 2013, the quotas of Gmail, Google Drive, and Google+ Photos were merged, and the total storage capacity was 15 GB.

Users can purchase additional space common to Gmail, Google Drive, and Google+ Photos through a monthly subscription. Since 2015, each account has been provided with 15 GB with the ability to increase it to 30 TB.

  1. Spam Filter

Gmail spam filter analyzes emails marked as spam in order to further recognize similar messages with greater accuracy. Users decide how to deal with spam. According to Google, the analysis of the content of letters is completely automated and occurs without the participation of people.

The data obtained is used only to block spam and select contextual advertising. While the privacy policy of other popular email services, such as Outlook.com and Yahoo, allows the collection of personal information of users for marketing purposes.

  1. Gmail for Mobile

Gmail for mobile is available in more than 40 languages. This is a free service in which many Gmail features are optimized for small screens. Since September 22, 2009, Gmail has supported Google Sync push technology for iPhone and iPod Touch.

  1. Social Media Integration

February 9, 2010, Google introduced the Google Buzz social network, integrated with Gmail and allowing the exchange of links, media files, and statuses. Many did not like the fact that the new service was automatically added to their account, and this idea had to be abandoned.

On December 10, 2011, Buzz stopped working and was replaced by a new product – Google+. Since January 2014, Gmail can send letters to Google+ contacts without even knowing their email address.

  1. Gmail Voice Chat

In August 2010, Google released a Google Chat plugin that allows you to call from Gmail to phone numbers. At first, the service did not have an official name, and the options were Google Voice in Gmail chat or Phone calls in Gmail. Now it is called Google Voice.

Since the end of 2012, Gmail users can make free calls to phone numbers in the USA and Canada and make paid international calls. On August 26, 2010, more than a million calls per day were recorded.

Users of a certain list of countries can make free calls from Google Voice to phone numbers in the USA, Canada, and some other countries. Video conferencing and document sharing in Google Voice are currently integrated with Google Hangouts.

  1. Gmail Search

The search window in Gmail allows you to find letters, contacts, files in Google Drive, events in Google Calendar and information on Google Sites, as well as send requests to Google Search. Since May 21, 2012, when entering an address in Gmail, autofill is used.

Like Google Search, Gmail does not support searching by word fragments but uses stemming. That is, recognizes the basis of the word: for example, the queried month displays results containing month.

  1. Cancel Submission

In June 2015, Gmail introduced the function of canceling sending emails. This technology has been at the Laboratory stage for 6 years. The mechanism of its work is actually to set the delay before sending it. That is, the server sends a letter to the addressee only after the time specified by the user.

Criticism

  1. Gmail analyzes the contents of letters, which is used to select contextual advertising, as well as filter spam.
  2. It is impossible to delete a letter permanently right away – the backup copy is stored on the server for up to 60 days.
  3. When sending a letter with a different return address, Gmail still marks the true sender address in the message headers. The developers report that this serves the fight against spam.
  4. By default, Gmail tries to download a full-fledged interface, which makes it difficult to work with a narrowband Internet connection. However, during the download, you can choose the simplified version of HTML only and set this option by default.
  5. Some users have noticed that automatically saving drafts can make it difficult to type a large letter.

Know these things while using Gmail

Useful features that boost your Gmail

Functions, settings, and additions that you might forget or not know about.

  1. Respond to scheduled emails

It happens that an important letter arrives at the most unfortunate moment – you opened it, but are not going to answer right now. And then you can just forget about it.

In this case, the extension for the Boomerang browser helps, which allows you to send letters at any particular time. It also knows how to return important read letters with a boomerang so that they do not go down in the tape along with those already read.

To work with the extension, you need to install it, after which a button with a boomerang will appear in the Gmail control menu.

  1. Cancel the letter after sending

There is nothing worse than clicking Submit and then notice that you made mistakes in the letter, attached the wrong file, or even sent reports to accounting to competitors. In this case, the function of canceling the sending of letters helps out a lot.

You can enable it in the settings menu (the gear button in the upper right corner). In it, you need to click on the General tab and select the Cancel sending function and then set the time period from 10 to 30 seconds. It is unlikely that you will often use it, but when you are – it is a real salvation.

  1. Archive sent letters so as not to clutter up the mailbox

If you write and answer dozens of letters daily and try to find the letter you need in the rubble of correspondence for hours. Then the archiving function after sending can save both time and nerves.

You can enable this feature in the settings menu. In it, you need to click on the tab General and select Show the button Send and archive in the answer in the menu Sending and archiving.

  1. Templates save time

If you write a lot of letters of the same type and often use already sent letters as a basis for new ones, then try to create templates for them. Still, replacing a couple of words and the recipient’s address is much easier than rewriting.

You can enable the Response Templates to function in the Laboratory tab in the settings menu. You can create new templates, delete them or insert them into letters in the response templates menu in the lower right corner of the letter itself.

  1. Unsubscribe from unnecessary mailing lists

Dozens of mailing lists from services whose faces we have long forgotten have become a byword. You could move to another country, change your love for beer to protein and get married. But still receive letters from sports food stores, dating services, and utilities of your home.

You can unsubscribe from unnecessary newsletters using the tools of Gmail itself, or using the good old Unroll.me service. The second option is more convenient since you do not need to search for unnecessary letters in the Gmail inbox and unsubscribe manually.

Instead, Unroll.me scans the mailbox and displays a list of all active subscriptions, which can be canceled in 2 clicks.

  1. Work with mail even without an internet connection

Gmail has a rather convenient offline function for those cases when there is no network signal, but there is still work. To work offline, you need to install the Gmail Offline extension from the store and allow it to scan all mail.

The extension will create current copies of all letters and addresses. After which you can reply to letters, delete unnecessary ones, save drafts, draw up templates, etc. And all changes are activated as soon as the computer connects to the Internet.

  1. Remove letters that take up a lot of space

Gmail gives each user free 15 GB to store mail, photos for Google+ and files on Google Drive, but sooner or later this luxury ends. There are several options for solving this problem – to buy additional storage space or pick up a pitchfork and scoop up this stable.

Doing it manually is a hell of longing, so the easiest way to immediately find the plumpest letters and clear them. You can do this by driving the Gmail search bar size: [X] m and specifying the size of the message in megabytes instead of [X]. After that, Gmail will list all emails that are larger than this size.

Making Google and Gmail accounts safer, attractive and easier to use

Although Gmail provides powerful security options, we do not all know or use them. So here are steps to protect Google and Gmail accounts from unauthorized access, hacking attempts and other unauthorized activities.

  1. Turn on two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication is an additional security strategy that better protects your account. When entering the account, you need to enter not only the password but also the second factor – the password that will come to the phone.

Method to enable two-factor authentication:
  • Click on Sign in to your Google Account and on the 2 -Step Verification option.
  • Click Start on the next screen. Google will suggest you use your phone as a second factor. If you do not want to use the phone, click on Choose another method.
  • If you select the phone option, enter it and click Next. A verification code will come to your number. Enter it and you’re done – you have set up two-factor authentication.
  1. Enter backup information.

If some information becomes unavailable, adding backup information is a good idea. For this: Click Sign in to your Google Account in the left pane. Scroll to the Account Recovery Options section.

  1. Add or change a backup email address.

Click on the Backup email address, then add a backup email address, enter the email you want to add, and click Finish.

  1. Revoke access from unauthorized applications

Every time you go to an application or website with a Google account, you allow them access to your account. And this permission is valid indefinitely.

This means that the application or site can go to your account whenever they want. But they can have access only to permitted information or services. It is not very safe.

Therefore, it is better to regularly check your account for unauthorized and unused applications and revoke their access.

Method to take away access from applications:
  • Click on Security and Login in the left panel → Applications that have access to your account.
  • Click on Application Management.
  • You will see a list of applications tied to your account. These are applications that have access to account information depending on the rights they have received.
  • You can click on the application to view its details, including access rights and the date you issued them.
  • You can click on Cancel access to withdraw access from the application.
  1. Take rights from insecure applications

There is an option in the Google account that allows access to insecure applications. Although it is not recommended to enable this option, you might have accidentally activated it. For example, to directly access messages in Microsoft Outlook.

Method to take away rights from unsafe applications:
  • Click on the option Applications that have access to your account in the left panel.
  • Click on Unsafe applications that are allowed and deactivate the option.
  1. Check basic account actions

Recording operations is a useful security measure to identify and track possible hacking or unauthorized access attempts. Google does not keep such records. You need to regularly check the account yourself and flag any suspicious event with a flag.

Method to check the record of operations:
  • Click on the Actions on devices and account security options in the browser.
  • You will see 2 sections: Recent Events and Recently Used Devices. Check if there is a record of suspicious events. You can click on Details and View connected devices to view the information in detail.
  1. Strengthen Gmail Account Security

After you check the security settings in your Google account, you can proceed to configure your Gmail account. Check your Gmail settings

  • Click on the gear icon and the Settings option.
  • In this tab, check Signature: make sure that the signature is correct and does not contain obscure links.
  • Answering machine: it should be turned on or off depending on what you configured, and its content should correspond to the situation.
  1. Accounts and Import

In this tab, check the following options:

  • Send emails as: make sure that all the email addresses in this section belong to you.
  • Receive mail from other accounts: all email addresses in this section should belong to you.
  • Grant access to your account: check that there are no unknown addresses in the list. If there is, it means that someone has gained access to your account, and you need to immediately revoke this access. To revoke access, click Delete next to this address.
  1. Filters and blocked addresses

In this tab, check the following options:

  • Filters: make sure that you do not have suspicious filters that you did not add. If there are any, delete them.
  • Blocked addresses: Verify that the addresses in this section are the ones you added to the block list. If there are any addresses you need, unlock them.
  1. Forwarding and POP / IMAP

In this tab, check the following options:

  • Forwarding: Make sure your mail is not forwarded to someone without your permission. If you find an unknown address, delete it so that outsiders do not have access to your mail.
  • POP Access: Verify that POPs were not enabled without your knowledge.
  • IMAP Access: Verify that IMAP is not enabled if you are not using it.
  1. Get rid of suspicious emails

If you receive a letter that you think is suspicious, and you no longer want to receive letters from this sender, you can block it. Gmail will automatically send future emails from this sender to Spam. To block an email address:

  • Open the email sent from the address you want to block.
  • Click on the Options icon in the upper-right corner of the message and select the Block sender option.
  1. Flag spam

If phishing or spam emails arrive in your inbox, you can mark them as spam. Then Gmail will consider them spam in the future. To mark an email as spam:

  • Open a phishing message/spam.
  • Click on the Options icon in the upper right corner and select Spam! or Report phishing.

  1. Organize your emails with priority stars

By default, Google has a star icon enabled so you can mark your most important messages. But a single priority measure may sometimes not be insufficient.

So it also gives us the option of implementing five other stars with different colors as well as other exclamation, sight, question or information symbols.

To activate the option in the configuration menu, and in the General tab look for the Stars option. You can choose between three predefined configurations with one, four stars or all symbols.

Although you also have the option to move the available ones to the In-Use zone to activate the ones you want. With all this, you can label emails with different priorities.

  1. Synchronize multiple Gmail accounts

There are many users who have more than one Gmail account. Either because they have a part for Google Apps or because they simply have an email for work.

Another for leisure or even others for different functions. All these accounts can be synchronized together so logging in time to time in these accounts can be avoided.

You just have to go to the Gmail options and enter the Accounts and Import tab. In it, you will see an option called Add another email address. You will have to give to open the process to add other accounts. Put yours in Gmail and go. You can also choose which of the accounts to use by default to send emails.

  1. Use your other email accounts

Although from the Gmail website the process of adding a new account can be complicated and tedious. Everything has been simplified in the mobile app so you can add your other email accounts to Gmail. You can use the option to add Yahoo, Hotmail, and Outlook account or any other by configuring your POP3 or IMAP.

All you have to do is go to the application settings and choose the option Add account. Once the process is done, you can apply to these accounts all the benefits of Gmail, from filters to labels.

  1. Create a custom theme

If you are someone who believes that an application is not really yours until you customize it to your liking. You will like to know that Gmail gives you the option to customize it using themes.

To do this, click on the options wheel at the top right and choose the Themes option. You will get a pop-up window in which to choose one to your liking.

Essentially, the themes are a background image, and in addition to the predefined ones, you can put your personalized photo. Once you have chosen one, you will have the option to change the background color between light and dark. Apply a vignette effect to darken the edges of the image or a blur to make it more transparent.

  1. Points in the email name also do not count

Another of the great secrets of Gmail is that it also ignores the points that we put to our email address. In this way, the emails sent to your.name@gmail.com and yourname@gmail.com will reach the same person as yourname@gmail.com.

  1. Create a to-do list with your emails

Gmail has an option to create a list of tasks with the titles of the emails you receive. It can be more useful than it seems, especially if you receive many emails a day. And want to have listings which are the top priority to answer before closing the tab and dedicate yourself to other things.

To create this list you just have to enter the email you want to add to it, click on the More drop-down menu, and choose the Add to tasks option. You can add as many as you want, mark them as done and/or delete them once you are done with them. You can also set reminders so you don’t forget them.

  1. Activate personal indicators

Gmail also has a system of visual indicators so you can know if an email has been sent only to you or also to a group of users. It is disabled by default, and when activated a yellow icon will appear with one or two arrows next to the title of each email.

When you see only one arrow the mail will have been sent to you and a group of people. And when two appear they will have sent it only to you.

Activating it is simple, and again all you have to do is enter the General tab of the Gmail configuration menu. In it, you will see the option of Personal Indicators, which although it is deactivated or without indicators, you can activate whenever you want.

  1. Know when and from where your account is accessed

One of the fears we all have in our online services is that someone may be accessing them without our noticing. To have control and know when this happens, Gmail allows us to consult a history of accesses in which we see who and from where it has entered our email account.

To access it go to the inbox, and at the bottom of the right, you will see a link that puts detailed information next to the information of the last activity of the account.

Click on it and you will be able to see the IP, the origin, by what means and for how long it has been accessing your email. If there is something that bothers us we can see the details of each access. And even edit the permissions so that a certain suspicious application cannot enter.

  1. Chats and video calls with Hangouts in Gmail

Google has more and more messaging applications, but at least for now the main one is still Hangouts. It is integrated into Gmail, so at any time you can start talking to your contacts. And/or start personal or group videoconferences with whoever you want. All while reading your mail.

  1. Use emoticons and attach Drive files

If you are a fan of emoticons and emojis there is good news for you, because Google allows you to use them in your Gmail emails. All you have to do is, when you write an email, look in the bottom menu and look for the icon of a smiling face. It will show you a popup with different types of emojis to add.

On the same menu, you also have the Google Drive icon, and by pressing it you can attach a file, not from your computer. But one of those that you have uploaded to the search engine company cloud.

Changes in Gmail on iPhone and Android

It’s been a busy year for Gmail.  It has received a better, cleaner and somewhat more intuitive design, and with Android 10 and iOS 13, it undergoes a change.

The good news is that in some cases you don’t have to do anything.  But the interface will be different. 2018 was all about how to use our phones less, both Google on Android and Apple on iOS, offering time-counting modes, in 2019 it’s about the dark mode.  iOS 13 and Android 10 offer something like this after Samsung had one last year with One UI.

With dark mode, Gmail also changes.  The application receives a dark interface and is available on both platforms.  It remains the same Gmail, but less tiring when using your phone at night.

How to enable dark mode for Gmail

First of all, you have to know that although Android 10 has been released, too few phones have received the new version of Google’s operating system.  And, for the next six months, the updates will be hard to come by.  But if you’re lucky enough to use Android 10, Gmail will switch to dark mode automatically.

Once you enable dark mode in Android 10, Gmail respects that setting and the interface adapts.  At the same time, on Pixel phones, if you enable battery saving, Gmail will still have a dark interface.

Or you can do it from settings: Settings – Theme. On iOS 13, Gmail respects the system setting.  And if you have iOS 11 or 12, you can activate the new interface from the dark theme settings and checkboxes.

Apple has already released the list, and older devices have been supported for three years now.  If you have one, upgrade and try the new Gmail.

Over the next year, more and more developers will implement such themes.  Facebook has already done it in Messenger and one is expected for the main application.   You can expect on Instagram, WhatsApp to do something similar.

Will we have to pay to use Gmail?

So far, Google has shown amazing generosity with its digital services by offering abundant free cloud storage. However, this could change shortly as the amount of data that we all accumulate online grows.

Google has started to reduce some of its offers of free storage in recent months in different services. The goal is to encourage users to subscribe more to Google One.

This has caused that in the last days some alarming headlines have appeared announcing that from now on we will have to pay for Gmail. The truth is that since its origins, this platform has offered a payment option to have more space, so you do not have to be alarmed more than necessary. When a user reaches the storage limit, he has very few options if he does not want to lose the archived data.

The solution is to pay or risk losing access to emails, photos, and personal documents. And although the cost for the average user is not very high, for Google this subscription can generate billions of dollars in additional revenue.

In the case of Gmail, this email system was launched in 2004 with free storage as a big claim against its rivals of the moment. Google used to increase the storage limit every two years, but in 2013 it stopped.

And now there are many users who are reaching the limit of 15 GB, with the risk of losing their files. If they do not pay to expand storage, so the prospect of having to pay is growing for many.

On the other hand, Google has also completed or limited other promotions that offered free cloud storage. Thus, for example, Chromebook laptops used to offer 100 GB free of charge for two years, but last May the period was reduced to just one year.

In the case of the Google Pixel Smartphone, launched in 2016, it came until now with free and unlimited photo storage through the company’s Photo service.

But the Pixel 4 that came out in October already only offers free photo storage. But with compressed photos, which reduces quality and forces us to pay if we want to save them with their original resolution.

Google introduced Google One, which comes to replace its Drive storage service. This service offers 15 GB for free, which allows you to store about 5,000 photos in total.

To expand the space you have to pay from $ 2 to $ 300 per month, depending on the capacity you hire. And allows you to store Gmail files as well as photos and videos. These prices vary depending on the countries.
