Origin of Google Classroom

Contrary to popular belief, educational institutions do not oppose the acquisition of knowledge online. The trouble is that university professors do not have the time or training needed to take the opportunities offered by online learning more seriously.

The solution is not to reform the education system, but to provide a way to combine the tools already used in learning with new opportunities.  Google has found a way to make this possible.

The suite of services, which can provide any school with a way to work together online. Already exists within the Google offering and is called the G Suite for Education – formerly known as Google Apps for education.

The main feature of this service is primarily Gmail, followed by Calendar, Classroom, Contacts, Drive, Docs, Forms, Groups, Sheets, Sites, Slides, Talk / Hangouts, and Vault.

According to Google experts, 70 million students and lecturers already rely on this platform. Half of the primary and secondary schools, and more than 800 colleges in the United States.

Google Classroom, which serves as a checkpoint for G Suite, is also a ticket to this educational service.  The classroom is not a rival to the traditional education system. But, by simplifying and fostering collaboration, could serve as a bridge between classrooms. And as a technological infrastructure that administrators could use to monitor the learning process.

Compared to systems that have existed for some time, such as the Blackboard service that was founded in 1997. And the D2L that has existed since 1999, Google Classroom is a platform that has yet to be proven.

In August 2017, it was three years since the service was first introduced. And the system is rapidly evolving, giving it the option in May to invite professors and students to join the service with the help of Google Groups.

Once administrators have set up the service, educators with a few clicks can create digital additions to their classes. Share posts via YouTube links, and assignments using Google Forms, and collect literature through Google Docs.

Students, on the other hand, can join the class from any device – computer, smartphone or tablet – using the same data they use to access G Suite.

While resourceful lecturers have found a way to teach through Google Classroom only. The service has been created to support traditional education systems, which means that classes are taught in classrooms and amphitheaters.

This is certainly not a reason for the Classroom to have any limitations on its use. As many studies suggest that this type of teaching promotes active learning and improves end results.

Google Classroom makes it much easier for lecturers to replace their classes with online courses, or to transfer some of their knowledge into the digital environment.  Ever since Google made Classroom available through private accounts, this service has become a great tool for any G Suite lecturer.

The most important feature of Google Classroom is that it removes the barriers to experimentation with the help of technology-based instructions. If you’ve sent an email at least once in your life, you’re ready to join this service.

Since the lecturer logs into Google Classroom, it is enough to click on the plus icon in the bottom right corner of the page and select the Assignment option.

It is then necessary to enter a student assignment in a specific field. In the Instructions site, provide a more detailed description of the assignment, if necessary, and click on Assign.

After that, it is enough for the student to sit at a Google-supported laptop, open Google Classroom. Click on Google Docs – a writing program – and begin writing an essay, or otherwise answer the assignment the lecturer has set.

From fall 2012 to the present, Google has, from an interesting opportunity, become the dominant mode of instruction in schools across the United States.

Thus, it has stimulated an evolutionary change in public education, and now the goals of education are to teach children skills. Such as teamwork and problem solving, while traditional academic knowledge, such as mathematical formulas, is slowly being put aside.

This, of course, puts Google and the technology economy at the center of the debate. About whether the goal of public school education is to produce academic citizens or only skilled workers.

Jonathan Rochelle, director of Google’s educational applications department, addressed the issue. He said in his speech, referring primarily to his own children:  knowledge of quadratic equations.

There is speculation that schools are giving Google more than they get – generations of future workers and clients.  The company gets $ 30 for each of the millions of Chromebooks it ships to schools. But by getting students used to their products from an early age, Google gets a lot more.

Every year, several million young Americans graduate from high school. And not only does Google make it easier for these users to turn their school accounts into personal ones, but they also encourage schools to do so.  It happens so often that teachers are reminded to turn their school account into a private Gmail account.

Google is the last major contender in a decades-long battle between big tech companies to make students their future users.  It is suggested that if one becomes accustomed to a particular operating system early on. They will later be more inclined to remain faithful to it for the rest of their consumer life.

Google has caught the attention of young generations and their teachers, very quickly, eliminating its rivals in the field of educational tools and marketing.

While other companies were generally pleased with the sale of existing offers for users and schools. In 2013 Jonathan Rochelle, a Google Docs developer, formed a team to create applications specifically designed for schools.

To popularize these educational tools, another Google expert, Jaime Casap, who was tasked with getting users to Google’s educational services, began traveling around the country with one motivational message.

Instead of promoting a specific Google product, he talked to the lecturers about ways they could improve their students’ perspectives through the creative use of online tools.

Unlike Apple and Microsoft, which make money from the sale of devices and software services. Google derives most of its profits from online advertising, which is tailored to users based on the information they provide.  The question of how Google will use the data it receives from students using the G Suite company has been around for years.

Today, there is a clause in Google’s contract with schools regarding education applications that obliges the company to respect the privacy of users.

The company claims that the needs of users using these applications have always been taken seriously. And that even early versions of contracts with users included an item of privacy.

In addition to Google’s educational applications, the implementation of technology in education is no longer a question of the future. But a necessity, as Google has timely noted with its educational package.

Tools of Google Classroom

  1. Create a class

To create your first class in Google Classroom, just click the button with the plus symbol at the top. On the screens that appear, you must name your class and categorize it accordingly.

Your students will be able to find your class and enter the system using the code that Google Classroom will generate. You can also invite your students using their email addresses.

  1. Launch announcements

The main screen of Google Classroom is very similar to a social network. Through it, it is possible to post announcements that become visible to all students who are part of that class.

These posts can include external links, YouTube videos, and even Google Drive attachments. It is the perfect tool for announcements and quick warnings that need to be seen by the whole class.

  1. Create reviews

The full productive potential of Google Classroom is clear once we open the class page for the first time. Through this screen, it is possible to send evaluations or assignments to the class with descriptions and deadline date and time.

Each publication of this type can include attachments including files that are in your Google Drive or external links. It is also possible to create the same task for more than one class.

  1. Receive and send Tasks

On the student side, this process is also intuitive and facilitated. When they finish the task and need to send it, they will do it all from that same Google Classroom screen.

All tasks have a file upload button, which students must use to deliver their work. This functionality also appears in Google Drive, when the student is performing his task.

  1. Organize your stuff

To work productively, teachers need to keep their materials well organized. By relying primarily on the digital environment of Google Drive, associated with Google Classroom.

It is possible to have all your files well categorized and separated. They are divided into folders with the names of the classes, which makes it easier to find specific material. Students also have equivalent functionality, with their files organized in folders with the names of the classes.

  1. Optimize communication

Students and teachers need good tools to communicate. The main Google Classroom screen encourages this contact, allowing you to post messages and target them to specific groups of students.

In addition, the teacher can respond to the submission of papers and evaluations through messages that are directed to the authors. This makes it possible to send private regarding what is produced.

How does Google Classroom work?

As it is a Google platform, you must have an account to access it.  The operation of the Classroom is very simple and brings many functions for users, both teachers, and students. That said, the administrator can create his class, manage content, create documents, assessments and distribute them.

Google Classroom is found in the online format for the computer and also as an app for the mobile device Android and IOS. In case the teacher works in a school, it is interesting to associate the room with the school profile through the G Suite for Education.

Features of Google Classroom

There are many features to make the experience very interactive between users.  For example, it is possible to attach links and files with the alternative of stipulating deadlines for the delivery of works.

Students are able to view the contents and attach their work, as well as send the files to the teacher.  In addition, the virtual room has some functions like a mural, students and about.

  1. Mural function

It works like a timeline in which you can see the main works done by the class.  It is a feature very similar to what we find on social networks. Such as the homepage of a Facebook profile, where we see everything that the person posted/shared during a period.

  1. Students

In this area, it is possible to make a list with all students of the course.  An essential function, as this is where invitations for students are made.

  1. About section

This is where the settings for some platform details are, such as class type, calendar, and Google Drive account.  In addition to defining a classroom to pass the content of the tool.

What are the main benefits of the application?

Google really created this platform in order to improve interactions between teachers and students. And provide everything that is possible to do in a classroom in a virtual environment. Google Classroom offers the following benefits:

  1. Creating and collecting assignments for students

The tool interweaves Google Docs, Drive and Gmail and allows teachers to create and collect paperless assignments.  Teachers in the tool can quickly see who has or has not completed the assignment and provide direct feedback to each student in real-time.

  1. Improving communication within the classroom

Teachers can inform students, ask questions, and comment with students in real-time, which can improve communication inside and outside the classroom. The biggest  of Google Classroom is Google Docs.

These documents are saved online and can be shared with an unlimited number of users. So you can create an ad or job using Google doc and your learners can access it via Google Drive.

In addition, Google Docs is easily organized and personalized in Google Drive folders. In other words, you no longer need to use your mailbox to share information. Just create a document, share it with your learners.

  1. Announcements

You can write announcements and publish them for all registered users to see. As a kind of mural – and you can even add links, videos and even documents.

  1. Submit reviews

On the page directed to the class, the administrator is able to send evaluations or assignments, setting deadlines for delivery, including attaching documents or links.

As well, it is possible to send the same task to different classes. Learners can comment on images in online courses. In addition, you can create URLs for the most interesting comments and use them to feed an online discussion.

  1. Messages

The platform makes it possible to create specific messages for groups of students.  It also allows feedback from evaluations directly to the student author.  Likewise, conversations in real-time with the class.

  1. Ease of use and accessibility on all devices

Even if you are not a Google user, there is nothing simpler than using Google Classroom. In addition to being able to use it via Chrome, compatible with all types of computers, mobile phones, and tablets.

You can see the missing assignments, review the ones that have been submitted and offer immediate feedback.

  1. Immediate feedback

Google Classroom offers you the opportunity to directly offer online support to learners. Thus enhancing the eLearning experience, since an immediate remark or comment has more impact on the minds of learners.

  1. No more paper documents

Very soon, the review of homework on paper may be part of a bygone era. Google Classroom contributes to this goal. By centralizing eLearning resources in one place in the cloud, you no longer have to walk around with a stack of papers. And no longer have to worry about printing, distribution or even the possibility of losing a duty.

  1. A user-friendly and minimalist interface

In keeping with Google’s simple layout, Google Classroom invites you into an environment where every design detail is intuitive, simple, and easy to use. Handling Google Classroom is therefore simple and easy.

  1. Google Classroom is open to everyone

Teachers and educators can also join Google Classroom as learners, allowing them to create a class for themselves and their colleagues. And use it for meetings, information sharing or professional development.

  1. Affordable and secure

The Classroom service is completely free of advertising. Student data will not be used for advertising purposes under any circumstances. The classroom’s activity is limited to members of the class.

Additionally, students can only be class members within their school’s Google Apps for Education domain.

In this application, student assignments are not placed in the same folder, but personal folders. So when it comes time to assess student work, the teacher can access it personally and anywhere as long as there is internet access.

  1. Make assignments easier

With the platform of Google Classroom, you no longer need to do assignments or homework using books. You can make assignments easily just by giving a title, adding a description and a date. In addition, you can also attach many files such as pictures, guides, to videos from YouTube.

  1. No need to be tired of checking the exam results

Although Google Classroom does not have a feature for creating quizzes or tests. You can use the Question feature to ask students multiple-choice questions and the results will come out immediately.

  1. Assess assignments anywhere

Teachers can also assess the results of their student assignments in Google Classroom and if there is anything to add, just leave a comment in the assignment comment session. The classroom will also store the grades of each student in the class.

  1. Centralized data storage

With Google Classroom, everything is in one central location. Students can view all their assignments in a specific folder, teachers can save eLearning materials.

And activities for the school year in the cloud and all grades can be seen in the application. No need to worry about lost documents or lost assessments, because they are all stored.

  1. Sharing resources fast

Online facilitators/teachers and trainers are given the power to share information and online resources with their students directly. Instead of the necessity to update eLearning courses or send individual e-mails to each student.

All they have to do is access the Google Classroom application. Distribute links to online resources and additional eLearning materials that can give benefits to their students.

This gives students the chance to get timely updates related to current lessons. So they can better understand the material and access multimedia equipment that can enhance their eLearning experience.

Google School, part of the Classroom, lets you assign and collect tasks, view who hasn’t submitted them, announce them, and create separate folders in Drive for each student or student.

In a manner similar to Google +, students can publish content in a series to connect with classmates. In addition to assignments, teachers can add Drive attachments, documents, Excel spreadsheets, etc.

And choose whether to automatically make a copy for the student as well. To protect the privacy of students, Google doesn’t use Classroom for marketing purposes, nor it places ads in it.

Disadvantages of Google Classroom

  1. Complicated account management

Google Classroom does not accept access to different domains. In addition, it is not possible to access it with your personal Gmail account; you must be signed in to Google Apps for Education.

So if you already have a Google ID, the constant use of multiple Google accounts can be annoying. For example, if you have a Google document or photo in your Gmail account and want to share it with Google Classroom. You need to save it separately to your hard drive, and then sign in with your Google Classroom account.

  1. Limited integration options

Google Classroom does not have the Google Calendar option and has no other calendar functionality. This can, therefore, be problematic with the deadlines for submission of work or the distribution of educational resources.

  1. Too limited

Users who are using Google Classroom for the first time can easily be confused because several buttons and icons are understandable only if one knows Google.

In addition, despite the integration of Youtube into Google, which facilitates the sharing of videos, the other popular tools are not integrated. This lack can be problematic when you try to convert a Word document to Google Doc for example. The Google Classroom environment is therefore only user-friendly if you use Google services.

  1. Absence of automatic updating

The activity feed does not update automatically, so learners often have to refresh the page to make sure they don’t miss important announcements.

  1. Complicated sharing between learners

Google Classroom does not provide a Share button as we normally find on social media. So it can’t recommend other people to join the class by clicking on the shared referral link. Learners can only share their work with other learners if they own the document.

When someone wants to join a class in Google Classroom, he must inform the class’s active email address. Then it will be invited by the admin through the menu in the Google Classroom application.

This is what sometimes makes it difficult for admins to get students in large numbers. However, a system like this can actually minimize the number of students who are not serious about learning in the classroom. Because only the active Google account owner can be invited

  1. Editing problems

Once your work has been created and distributed to other users, they become owners of the document and can modify it. So they can delete whatever they want from the document, which can be a disadvantage, especially in the event of an accident.

  1. Lack of quiz or automatic test functionality

One of the reasons why Google Classroom cannot completely replace direct learning is that the application cannot automatically offer quizzes or tests to your learners. In general, Google Classroom is better suited to a hybrid learning experience rather than a completely online program.

  1. Impersonal

Google Classroom did not integrate Google Hangouts, which is a problem. Online interaction between teachers and learners is only possible via Google documents.

And since teaching requires interaction and building relationships with learners, online discussions are the best way to do this in a virtual environment. Unfortunately, Google Classroom does not have direct messaging functionality.

  1. There is no Like button or indicator that shows the number of audiences who have read or liked the material shared in class.

Seeing its function, it looks like Google Classroom is indeed made for more serious things. Unlike social media whose function is simply to interact with other users.

So that not all features that we often encounter on social media are in Google Classroom. Yes, the focus of interaction between Google Classroom users is teaching and learning activities.

Therefore some of the buttons on social media may be some that are considered not so important in Google Classroom. So that when the button is not provided it doesn’t matter. Or it could be that when the buttons are provided in Google Classroom it will actually make learning activities not optimal.

There is a New Google Classroom that makes organizing online classrooms easier

The Google Classroom has been updated. As the name suggests, the service is an educational platform that brings together students and teachers in an online environment. In addition to being more intuitive, the new version is faster and brings new features.

The platform appeared in 2014 and was created with the help of teachers who took advantage of the G Suite tools with students, but noticed that some tools were not suitable for teaching.

The Google Classroom then emerged as a specifically focused environment in educational activities. Since then, the project has grown in resources and users.

It was already possible to publish notices to students, manage classes, share documents and organize online activities. Based on the feedback obtained, these and other features have gained add-ons.

One of the novelties is the new Classwork page, which allows the teacher to organize tasks in modules and units without much effort.

Now it is also possible to reuse materials or activities from previous classes. If the teacher applied a test in one class, he can reuse the questions in other classes. And, if necessary, edit them for a more precise adaptation.

Google also says that it is now easier to manage students, teachers, and guardians. In addition, a new configuration page allows to set parameters for each class more quickly.

Such as class description and what students can publish. The other added features include improved file management in various formats ( Microsoft Office, PDF, videos, among others).

Data classification tool that allows teachers to easily save and access class comments, and a mechanism to enable or disable certain types of notifications.

Google Classroom is free. Anyone with a Google account can create a class. Then, just invite students by email. In the case of schools and universities, Google requests that the institution enrolls in the also free G Suite for Education to take advantage of the Classroom.

What is needed to use the platform?

You must have a Google account, access to a computer or mobile device and also access to the internet.

How to create an account in the app?

First, when entering the Google Classroom screen, the user will need to have a Google Apps for Education account. The user needs to inform his / her full name, information about the institution to which he/she belongs (type, school or university website, e-mail, number of students, address, etc.). After filling in this data and creating a login ID and password. You can now enter the Google Classroom.

How to configure?

When registering, despite the ease of entering the address and other information, the user/administrator can find an obstacle in relation to the school’s email and website.  If he is an independent teacher, just in order to make material available to his students, he may encounter difficulties when registering.

A domain is required to confirm admission. After completing the registration procedure, the user can now enter Google Classroom with the Apps for Education login. And have access to all the benefits that this platform provides.
