What is the Google classroom?

As the classroom is becoming increasingly paperless, teachers should begin to find solutions to share homework, manage their classroom, communicate with students, etc.

1.     Create a class and add students

Google Classroom allows you to create a unique class for each class you teach. With just three mouse clicks and a few keystrokes, you can create a class. Google Classrooms are divided into different sections. In the Students section, you can see all the students in your class.

You can add students to your class manually, or you can join your class on your own using your own Google account. Google Classroom offers you the class code which is located on the left side of the screen. You can share that class code with the students whom you want to join that class.

Students sign in to their Google accounts and use the class code to join using their computers, laptops or chrome books. Within the Student section, you can also determine if your students can comment on the questions, announcements and tasks they create or if they can only post.

If you wish, you can also choose to be the only one who can post and comment in your class. In the stream section, you will find the tasks, announcements and questions that you create. This is the section where you will spend most of your time after setting up your classes.

2.     Use of Google Classroom tasks

Homework is a great way to collect student work and provide comments and grades. When you create a task, you can provide specific instructions for that task, an due date and a topic. If you include an due date for homework, students will have until 11:59 p.m. on the date to present your work for that task.

If they send the work late, Google Classroom still accepts the assignment, but indicates that it was delivered late. One of the best features of Google Classroom Assignments is that you can add files to the tasks you create.

You can add a file from your computer, a Google Drive file, a YouTube video or a link to a website. One idea is that a business education teacher can assign a writing message to a relevant person in the news and add a link to a YouTube video of that person making a speech.

Students can send any type of file to their Classroom, not just Google Docs. Students can not only submit their completed work as files, but can also open them directly from Classroom and rate them right there.

You can open files sent to your Classroom as long as your computer has an Internet connection and the software needed to open the file … it doesn’t even have to be on your school’s computer! For example, you can assign an essay and your students can send their complete essays to a task that you created in your Google Classroom from any computer that has an Internet connection.

You can then open the file and rate it on your computer at school or at home. Google Classroom acts as a “Dropbox” for homework. Students no longer need to print their work and hand it over physically. This gives you more time during class to concentrate on moving on, rather than wasting time collecting work.

3.     Generate discussions with the questions feature

Within a specific class, google Classroom allows you to ask questions. As with homework, you can add files to the questions you post, and you can assign a due date if you wish. You can post short answers or multiple choice questions for your students to answer in the classroom.

As students answer a multiple-choice question, Google Classroom tabulates the results of that question and shows you the breakdown of students’ responses in real time. Classroom indicates which students chose that option when you click on one of the multiple choice answers.

When students answer a short answer question, Google Classroom cannot tabulate the results, so it simply shows the students’ answers. At that time, you can comment or respond to each student and give a grade as you see fit.

Things you can’t do with Google Classroom

There are some things you should know before you start using Google Classroom with the wrong reasons. It is an online learning platform, but it is not:

v  A chat box: You can comment on assignments and announcements, but there is no chat function. If you want to be in direct contact with your students, you can send them an email or you can enable other Google applications to take on that function.

v  A test or quiz tool: There are some possibilities when it comes to conducting quiz in Google Classroom, but it is not yet intended to be a questionnaire tool. There are so many other good applications for that.

Option 1: You can add tests and tasks from other educational applications directly within Google Classroom, such as a Book Widgets test that automatically graded.

Option 2: This is what you can do within Google Classroom: add a question. Then choose between multiple choice questions or an open answer. It’s not that impressive, I know. It is better to choose the first option if you want your digital classroom to be more interactive.

Set up Google Classroom in 3 simple steps

Google Classroom must mean something to you. You will find it easy to configure and very intuitive to continue using. To set up your Google Classroom teacher account, follow these steps:

1.     Sign up

When you access, you can use Classroom just by logging in using a G suite email address. Everything works fine that way too. It’s harder to manage your students if you have hundreds of them. One by one, you will have to add them.

2.     Create your first class

In the right corner in the upper side, click on the “+” button. Choose to “create a class”. Here, you complete detailed information about your class. Write a good class name and section. The class name must be the title of your class so you can find it in a few seconds. Then click on “create”.

3.     Invite students to your class

You can invite your students, once you have created your class. Let them sign using the Google Classroom application by entering the unique code you gave them. In your created class, you will find the code. Go to the tab “students”. Another option is to invite your students one by one by entering their email address.

Now your online class is ready! At least, it’s there and everyone can access it. There are some other things you must do before you can really take off.

§  Make an announcement or just Create your first assignment. At the bottom of the Updates tab, click on the “+” button. Do not forget to number your assignments. It is easier for your students to see which one is the first, since they cannot reorder the tasks in the stream. Click on the title to see if any student has submitted the assignment and to give grades and comments. Then, you can return homework to your students, so they can start editing again.

§  Add some lession material to your homework / class. Add Google Drive material or add a YouTube video, a file from your computer, a link, etc. You will find these options just below the due date. If you only want to share a presentation of your class, which is not linked to an assignment, you can go to the “about” tab. Here you can add lesson material such as slides, interesting articles and examples.

§  Access the Drive folder. Google Classroom creates a Drive folder for that class in each time you create a new class. You can access the folder by going to all the tiles in your class. In each tile, you will find a folder icon. Click on it and you will be in the folder. Here you can also add class materials. All your students’ homework automatically ends in the Google Drive folder, so you will find it whenever you want.


The classroom Explorer allows a growing number of massive actions that can help maintain the best user experience in Google Classroom for teachers and students. Because Classroom classes are generally not reused from year to year, a maintenance action for teachers is to archive their old classes, which eliminates them from view on the student’s home screen in Classroom.

When teachers do not archive old classes, it can create disorder and confusion for students, so doing this in bulk can be a useful administrative action. Archiving classes on behalf of a teacher is non-destructive and completely reversible by the teacher. Bulk archiving can only be performed in classes that are currently in an “ACTIVE” state.

The identification of old classes not used in the Classroom Explorer can be achieved in a few clicks. From the browser, filter ACTIVE classes that have a last updated date / time before a specified limit. Select the classes of interest, click on the three-dot icon, then on “Archive XX  selected classes”.

You will then be asked to review and approve the archiving action in all selected classes. Modify the email to the teachers to your liking and then confirm the archiving action.

As noted in the default email text, the teacher can “unarchive” their classes, returning them to an active state through the Classroom interface. In addition, teachers should know that archived class publications can be “reused” through the “Reuse post” feature in Classroom.

After all the hard work of creating classrooms, posts and assignments; Many educators think that it is better to remove a classroom after use as if only a certain amount of digital space or storage were allocated. Or maybe some are doing it for organizational reasons, to avoid clutter.

Do not delete old classes; archive them instead. Classroom allows you to reuse and copy posts and archived course assignments. You do not need to worry about the amount of digital space you are using or that your account is packed.

You want to be able to reuse them next year if you don’t delete your class and your assignments! Even if you file a class, you can reuse the assignment of that class.

Go to the class title page: Locate the 3 points in the upper right hand corner. This is the “More options” menu. Click on the 3 dots and choose “File”.

Your class is not deleted or lost when you archive a class. It is simply found in “Archived classes”. Click on the 3-line menu in the upper left corner and select “Archived classes” at the bottom.

The documents are not in the Google classroom

Nothing is attached in Google Classroom which is a paradigm shift to remember. Everything is linked from Google Drive. Archiving a class in Google Classroom disables the possibility of students submitting papers to the class. However, all documents linked in a task are still in Google Drive. The documents in your Google Drive can be still in your Google Drive.

Create an impressive assignment class

Do you want some homework during the summer? (No, no, but here is an idea anyway). Create an amazing assignments class without students.

Click on the plus icon in the lower right corner in the classroom and choose “Reuse post.” This will allow you to choose from a list of classes, including archived classes. Choose the class you just archived!

What assignments were amazing and you would probably reuse them next year? Use them again. Remember that “attachments” in assignments are NOT attached. They are linked from Google Drive. You DO NOT want to make copies of things in your Google Drive. This only makes a giant mess of documents with the same name.

Immediately the assignment opens to edit as you click the create new copies of all attachments check box. This is the perfect time to reflect the light on how the assignment could be improved. What would you do different? How would you write the instructions? What additional resources could your students benefit from?

To google drive, any “attachments” are really just links. Click on the “attachment” title and start the document from Google Drive. Change dates and update information. Use the same document every year!

Version History

Do not make copies! Use the File menu for google apps and choose “Version History.” Restore the document to a version that does not have student edits on it. Then it is new and ready to go for next year. In the case of a Google form, go to the Response tab and click on the 3-point menu. This will give you the option of “Delete all responses”. This makes your form ready for next year! Do not make copies! Re-use!!


Assign homework to amazing assignment class without students.

Next year                 

Create a new class for your new students. Use the “Reuse post” option to reuse the assignments in your “Awesome assignments” class. This way, you will know that they are up to date and you do not have to scroll through all the tasks you had last year.


Next year, consider holding a new Google Classroom class in each unit or every 6 weeks. Then file throughout the school year. This facilitates the reuse of your publications from the previous year, since you do not have to scroll through the entire list of tasks from last year.

Archive or delete a class

When you have finished teaching a class, you can archive it. When a class is archived, it is archived for all teachers and students of that class. If you do not archive the classes, they still appear on the Classroom home page and on the student home pages.

You can restore an archived class if you want to use it again, or delete it if you will never use it again.

Teachers and co-teachers can archive a class, but only the main teacher can delete a class. Students cannot file or delete a class.

Note: To delete a class, you must first archive it.

When you archive a class

v  It is placed in a separate area to preserve class materials, student work and publications. You will not see it with your active classes on the home page.

v  You and your students can see an archived class. To use the class again, you must restore it.

v  You and your students can still access any class material in Google Drive. That includes any attachments for homework or other student work.

v  Students cannot withdraw from a class that has been archived. This may limit how they can manage the classes they have finished taking.
